About This Blog
Short Version: I have never seen Babylon 5 before, so I'm going to watch every episode in order, and blog my reactions.
Longer Version: I don't know how I missed Babylon 5 the first time around. I've been an SF geek my whole life, and while I haven't seen every SF show out there I've certainly seen enough to count myself as a rabid fan. I was even in high school when Babylon 5 debuted in the early 90s, so I was kind of the target market, but for some reason I just never watched it. It's not that I watched one episode and didn't like it: I never watched any of it at all, ever. Maybe my city aired it against some other show I already loved, so B5 never got a chance? Maybe my parents saw how much TV I already watched and had to draw a line somewhere? Whatever the reason, I missed it, and people have always raved about it, and I've always INTENDED to watch it, but I never have. Now, thanks to the miracle of streaming content and binge-based culture, watching it is easy. So I'm going to.
If you don't know me, my name is Dan Wells. I'm an SF author who's worked in publishing, TV, film, and stage; I have 15 books in print, including a NYT Bestseller and a movie adaptation. These credits don't make my opinions "correct," but they do make it "informed," so I mention them because my background is going to flavor the way I see and think about the show. If you want to learn more about me, feel free to visit my website or buy my books.
These reaction posts are not going to be constrained in any way: I'm not going to try to be deep, though I occasionally might be by accident; I'm not going to try to be comprehensively analytical, or funny, or rude, or anything else. This is just my journal as I watch the show and comment on it. I will be using the following viewing order (mostly):
Babylon 5 is heralded as one of the greatest SF series of all time, and the godfather of today's obsession with serialized storytelling. Time to see what all the fuss is about.
NOTE: The cover image is a new render of the station, done by the artist David Gian-Cursio. The original CG is super dated now, and Gian-Cursio's re-renders are gorgeous.
ALSO NOTE: Yes, my profile photo is a picture of me and Claudia Christian, aka Commander Susan Ivanova. We shared a booth at PensaCon a few years ago when she published a memoir. She is awesome, though I doubt she remembers me :)
